“Society 5.0”: Japanese technologies for the digital transformation of the Russian economy

As part of the Cross Year of Russia and Japan and on the eve of the international industrial exhibition INNOPROM-2018, representatives of Mitsubishi Electric met with journalists from leading media and discussed in an informal setting the implementation of the Japanese national strategy “Society 5.0”, as well as the possibility of implementing its foundations of the strategy in Russia.


Optimization of social and economic development resources

“Society 5.0” involves the formation of a new model of economic growth, taking into account the “solution of social problems”, as well as “building a better future”, which contributes to the achievement of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDG / SDG).

Together with the efforts of the Japanese government in the field of intellectual property protection and international standardization, accelerating regulatory and institutional reforms and ensuring their acceptance by society, and developing human resources, Japanese business is working to form a common technology platform for creating new “smart systems” and forms of business.

To accelerate the implementation of the Society 5.0 strategy, the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry of Japan (METI) is implementing the “Integrated Industries” program, which includes the following innovative areas:

autonomous driving / mobility of all categories of people;
manufacturing / robotics;
production infrastructure;
biotechnology / chemistry;
“smart” life.
To date, ready-made technological developments are already being tested in Japan in such areas as autonomous driving, agriculture, industry, smart cities and smart and integrated construction (I-construction, ICT Integrated construction).

Mitsubishi Electric technologies are key elements in the implementation of autonomous transport and intelligent transport systems (high-precision 3-D maps based on CLAS centimeter-level differential correction system signals transmitted by QZSS quasi-zenith satellites).

Depending on the results of testing digital technologies in agriculture and construction, satellite technologies and systems for creating and updating high-precision 3D maps produced by Mitsubishi Electric can be used in the implementation of smart land use and integrated construction (ICT Integrated construction).

In the field of industrial digital transformation, the Mitsubishi Electric e-F@ctory platform and the Edger’s consortium are the backbone of smart manufacturing based on the seamless integration of IT and manufacturing systems.


“Society 5.0” – a competitiveness strategy applicable in Russia

As part of the Innoprom-2017 exhibition, Mitsubishi Electric presented the President of Russia V.V. Putin the “Society 5.0” strategy and related examples of the introduction of advanced technologies and developments that underlie the “smart” industry and infrastructure of today’s Japan.

In May 2018, President V.V. Putin formulated national goals and objectives for the period up to 2024, which are consonant with the Japanese vision of approaches to ensuring socio-economic development, in the following areas:

breakthrough in scientific, technological, social and economic development;
raising the standard of living;
creation of conditions and opportunities for self-realization and application of the talents of each person.
Already, Mitsubishi Electric is contributing to the implementation of the new Decree of May in such areas as creating industrial and IT infrastructure for processing big data, educating specialists to work with smart systems, and creating end-to-end digital technologies for sustainable economic growth.

Thus, the e-F@ctory platform for industrial enterprises, which is one of the key elements of Society 5.0, is already successfully operating in Russian enterprises. It is used to create digital production, optimize production processes. Its key element is the technology of “peripheral computing” (Edge Computing), which allows you to analyze and select the necessary data, transforming them the information necessary for making optimal management decisions.

Edge Computing technology is, in fact, a technology to contain the growth of data and the costs associated with this process.


A new format for global cooperation between leading technology companies as part of the digital transformation of industry, including in Russia.

Mitsubishi Electric’s next step in digital manufacturing and the implementation of the Society 5.0 strategy was the creation of the Edger’s Consortium in November 2017. Its main goal is to strengthen the interaction between IT and production equipment manufacturing companies operating at different levels of the enterprise.
