How to choose or build a desktop computer for gaming

Computer games are not losing their popularity. This is confirmed by regular e-sports tournaments with millions of prize pools and the same audience. Even if you are not an sports player and just love to play in the evenings, you need a good gaming computer or laptop. Without it, you can’t play modern games with cool graphics.

I will tell you what gaming computers are, is it realistic to assemble such a computer yourself and how much it will cost.

Which is better: laptop or PC

In my opinion, a desktop gaming computer will always be better for gaming. Not even because of the differences between mobile and desktop versions of processors and video cards. The main advantage of the PC is high-quality cooling.

It is very difficult to organize good heat dissipation in a thin case. This is possible only in special gaming laptops, which often cost more than computers. If you play regularly, but not very often, it is hardly worth spending money on such a model. If you still want to get a serious car, choose the latest series models.

It has very good hardware that will provide high performance even in the most demanding and beautiful games for years to come. Modern revisions of the Intel Core i9 processor and the revolutionary GeForce RTX 2080 graphics card will cope with any task.

The laptop keyboard slides forward and opens up large air ducts to quickly blow hot air out. There will be no overheating even at maximum graphics settings.

Despite the advantages of individual models, laptops have an obvious drawback – they work with only one set of components. Upgrade options are limited by storage and RAM. Everything else is slowly and inevitably aging.

The gaming Acer Predator Helios 700 looks very gaming-like. The powerful cooling system is very clearly visible on the right – it is located right under the keyboard. Such a laptop costs almost 240,000 rubles. A lot of money, but such is the cost of new developments

Which is cheaper – assemble it yourself or buy a ready-made one

Cheaper – independently, but also more difficult. If the question of cost is secondary, it is better to buy a ready-made box from a reputable manufacturer. Many brands create separate gaming lines. For example, Acer has a separate Predator brand for gaming products.

Prices for gaming system units start at about 45,000 rubles. The average price for a good model is about 200,000 rubles. There is almost no ceiling – there are models for almost 700,000 rubles and more than a million. To this must be added the cost of the monitor and peripherals. The result is a round sum.

If your budget is tight, it’s best to build your own computer. It will definitely be better than an inexpensive off-the-shelf assembly.  The main thing is to do everything carefully, according to the instructions, and especially diligently apply thermal paste to the contact surface of the processor.

What to assemble inexpensive, but good

The great thing about self-assembly is that you have complete control over your costs. If you have put off great games for many years and are now planning to play not Far Cry 5, but Skyrim or GTA V, you do not need expensive hardware. Old legends don’t even require a discrete graphics card with a good processor. This is the first point of savings.

If you prefer a low-cost, simple build, you can get an AMD Ryzen 5 2400G processor with an integrated AMD Radeon RX Vega 11 graphics chip. It’s a good combination that pulls a lot of games – you can wait with the purchase of a video card.

Of the cooling systems, the efficient and reliable coolers Aero Cool Verco 5 have proven themselves well. The optimal motherboard is Airlock B450M Pro4. RAM needs at least 16 gigabytes.

The power supply in this configuration does not have to be high, but it is advisable to take a model from a trusted manufacturer and with 80 Plus certification. For example, Aero Cool AERO White. It uses reliable Japanese capacitors and has effective protection against voltage surges and short circuits. It is better to buy a case with a well-thought-out cooling architecture. Aero Cool AirHawk is perfect: beautiful, easy to install and with the ability to improve cooling in the future.

How to build a gaming computer for 50,000 ₽
If you prefer a serious build, you can look at more powerful Intel processors and pick a good graphics card. Among the new graphics cards, Nvidia models with new GDDR6 memory and Turing architecture are worth considering. For example, GIGABYTE GeForce GTX 1660 SUPER. These are truly breakthrough cards in terms of graphics in games. Their performance is impressive even for seasoned gamers. If money is really tight, you can put up with low graphics settings and get an inexpensive GeForce GTX 1650 It.

How to choose a mouse, keyboard and monitor

There is no point in buying cheap Chinese mice and keyboards. They’re not that good at playing. Quality peripherals will help you achieve better results.

For example, the SteelSeries Rival 3 mouse is reliable, with a symmetrical shape, additional buttons, backlighting, and proprietary customization software. Optical sensor, works well on different surfaces. The sensitivity is also decent – up to 8500 DPI. In general, a complete set for a comfortable game.

The keyboard can be found from the same brand. Apex 5 is a good option. It has great mechanical switches with long life and fast response times, button customization software, and backlighting.

From monitors I can recommend Acer AOPEN 27HC2R. This is an inexpensive 27-inch gaming monitor with a Fulda VA panel, 1500R curvature, 165Hz refresh rate and an affordable price tag.

Another personal recommendation. Find a good chair to play comfortably. The Aero Cool armchairs have proven themselves quite well.
