We recently reviewed the MSI GF75 8RC-206RU Thin 17.3-inch entry-level gaming laptop, which focuses on small dimensions for such a laptop. Today we will look at its almost complete opposite, the Dell G7 7790, the G717-7003. This is a heavy and powerful laptop, which at the time of this writing is the most affordable laptop based on the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060.

Case, ports and keyboard
The lid of the laptop is made of dark gray plastic. Fingerprints remain on it, but are also easily erased. The working surface, like the rest of the case, is already made of plastic, but still in the same dark gray color.
Overall, the design of the Dell G7 7790 is the same as the Dell G5 and I personally really like it. Looks serious and without the excessive clumsy, often inherent in gaming machines.
. On the left are USB, Thunderbolt 3 and a combo audio output, and on the right is another USB and card reader. The third USB, HDMI and mini DisplayPort video outputs, RJ-45 network port, as well as a socket for connecting the power adapter are located at the back right between the “nozzles” of the cooling system.
I usually use gaming laptops in conjunction with a monitor, and this arrangement of ports contributes to better cable management. All the cords are in the back and they are not visible. I like it when everything is done this way.
As for the number of connectors, in general, everything is in place, but I would like to see one more USB, so that in total there are four pieces. However, this is just a nitpick, during operation I did not need another USB.
It is full-sized with medium key travel and is great for multimedia and work purposes, but I can’t call it a gaming one. So, in my opinion, in MSI, ASUS and Acer gaming laptops, the keyboards are much better.
The laptop has LED backlit keys. On the one hand, for that kind of money, I would like to see RGB backlighting, on the other, it’s good that it is white, and not already boring red.
It’s good that the touchpad has also migrated from the already mentioned Dell G5 to the Dell G7. Why? Because it’s one of the best touchpads in a gaming laptop. It responds well, recognizes gestures perfectly, and in everyday use you can do without a mouse at all without any problems.
The 17.3-inch IPS-display with Full HD-resolution and antiglare coating does not have such “chips” as the refresh rate of 144 Hz or support for NVIDIA G-Sync, but it has good viewing angles and color reproduction. It is comfortable to use a laptop with a screen brightness of 70-80% of the maximum. It’s nice that there is a small margin for this parameter.
In general, the screen is mediocre. It is clearly inferior to its competitors from ASUS, but noticeably better than the MSI GL73 8SE.
The sound subsystem of the Dell G7 7790 consists of two speakers, to which Nahimic has had a hand. The sound is average, this is more suitable for laptops of the Dell Inspiron or Dell Vostro series in the middle price category.
Performance, cooling and video games
The review takes part in the basic modification of the Dell G7 with a quad-core Intel Core i5 8300H processor with a nominal frequency of 2.3 GHz (the maximum frequency for one core is 4 GHz, for all four – 3.9 GHz). To evaluate and compare performance with other chips, below are the test results in the benchmarks CINEBENCH R15 and Corona 1.3 Benchmark.
The graphics in this Dell gaming laptop are handled by an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060 graphics card with 4GB of VRAM.
Like most competitors, the Dell G7 has the ability to upgrade: add RAM, replace HDD and SSD with more capacious ones. The latter, by the way, is installed here in the form factor M.2 SSD 2240, but it can later be changed to a longer one. Special skids allow you to change the length.
The autonomy of the laptop is provided by a lithium-ion battery with a capacity of 60 W * h. When testing it, the following results were obtained (rounded down):
reading test (balanced mode, brightness 100%) – 7 hours 10 minutes,
viewing streaming video (balanced mode, brightness 60%) – 5 hours 30 minutes,
under load (maximum performance, Unigine Heaven, brightness 100%) – 1 hour 50 minutes.
